A culinary revolution is underway in downtown Cancun, with foodie tourism experiencing a significant surge of up to 30%. This growth is attributed to innovative programs that have brought together over 10 local restaurants, creating a gastronomic haven for tourists.

According to Luis Garcia Jurado, director of Food Travel, the company behind this initiative, these culinary experiences cater to visitors seeking authentic Mexican cuisine. “We’re seeing a shift in tourism trends, with Europeans opting for a more genuine and immersive experience that’s closer to what Mexicans eat,” he explained.

The programs offer three unique activities: a wrestling match paired with dinner, a tour of various eateries serving traditional Mexican dishes, and cooking classes where visitors can learn the art of preparing iconic mole. Prices range from $80 to $120 per person.

Garcia Jurado highlighted that these experiences not only contribute to an increase in restaurant occupancy but also provide tourists with the opportunity to sample local specialties such as tacos al pastor, carnitas, tripa, and suadero, as well as tamales, birria, mondongo, quesabirrias, empanadas, and quesadillas.

As part of their plans, participating restaurants will create customized menus tailored to tourists’ tastes while incorporating Mexico’s rich culinary traditions. This initiative aims to attract visitors from the beach areas of Playa del Carmen and Cancun, promoting the economic impact and unique experience that downtown Cancun has to offer.

With an average of 1,000 participants per month during peak seasons and 600 during off-peak periods, these culinary programs have become a significant draw for tourists. As foodie tourism continues to grow in Cancun’s city center, this trend will have a lasting impact on the local dining scene.
