Infantry Colonel Yamir Emir Kuri Serrano, commander of the 13th Infantry Battalion, based in Rancho Nuevo, said in an interview from the military barracks plaza that a project is already in place to authorize the recruitment of women within this armed forces to join the Mexican army. Many barracks already have a presence of women within the armed forces. First, a dormitory will be built exclusively for female personnel. Then, a call for applications will be issued for their enlistment, and they will be treated with equal respect as other active-duty comrades within the military barracks in Rancho Nuevo.
In this regard, Kuri Serrano said that the requirements for women to join the Mexican army will be the same as those for men. These requirements include a birth certificate, an INE (National Institute of Statistics) ID, a high school diploma, and proof of pregnancy. Initially, a dormitory will be built exclusively for women. Some women are already in this barracks, but the new project will involve 35 women enrolling in the 13th Infantry Battalion based in Rancho Nuevo, in the municipality of San Cristóbal de las Casas, in the highlands of Chiapas.
“We already have contact with female personnel; we’ve evolved in this regard. One of my duties as a commander is to respect them. They’re my partners. I have to give them their due. Before, there were no women in the army. Today, we already have women in the Mexican army. In that sense, we’ve grown a lot. We’re still waiting for authorization to enroll women here in the 13th Infantry Battalion. There’s a project to build a women’s dormitory. When the dormitory is finished, 35 women will be enrolled, which will form the women’s section of this battalion. The 20th Battalion in Tuxtla Gutiérrez already has women enrolled. The army is evolving; it’s modernized; we have good vehicles and weapons,” said Kuri Serrano.
Finally, she said that in all military barracks there are information modules to register in the units, there are a series of requirements that they ask for, in the case of women the documents are also requested: “birth certificate, your completed high school diploma, a letter of clean criminal record, proof of no pregnancy, age is between 18 and 28 years, among other documents, medical, psychological, physical exams are presented, if a person is a candidate and is potential, can register without any problem, just as men will have to pass the exam.”
