The exhibition “Guenda Biaani, the Gift That Remained,” featuring 62 works by renowned Oaxacan artists, will be on display beginning May 8 at the Center for Research, Innovation, and Development of the Arts (CEIIDA) of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León, thanks to the collaboration between the university and the Benito Juárez Autonomous University of Oaxaca (UABJO).
The collective’s works showcase the artists’ own techniques, as well as frescoes, oil paintings, sculptures, and prints—artistic expressions passed down to young people studying at the recently established School of Plastic and Visual Arts, located in Juchitán de Zaragoza, Oaxaca, in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region.
Moisés García Nava, director of the faculty, reported that the new academic unit in the Isthmus “is the realization of a long-held dream for Zapotec artists and also represents a tribute to the memory of the maestro Francisco Toledo (1940-2019), a native of Juchitán.”
In an interview, the academic stated that, in May of last year, at the request of Uabjo’s rector, Cristian Carreño López, local authorities and a group of artists led by Víctor Cha’ca arranged for the donation of works of art to promote the school in the region.
The importance of “Guenda Biaani, the Gift That Remained,” at Ceiida-UANL, goes further, as the Monterrey public will have the opportunity to purchase some of the pieces, a financial resource that will be used to equip the new arts school in southern Mexico.
The exhibition includes works by artists such as Victor Cha’ca, Manuel Miguel, Tomas Pineda Matus, Ana Santos, Israel Nazario, Ana Hernandez, Antonio Casas, Hugo Tovar, Armando Guerrero, and Enrique Flores, among others.
