A notorious figure has returned to Cancún, Mexico, with a vengeance. Leticia Rodríguez Lara, known as “Doña Lety” or “La 40,” has been linked to human trafficking at the city’s airport, along with other illicit businesses such as extortion, drug dealing, and even homicides. Her reign of terror has left business owners shaken, from hoteliers to restaurateurs.
After serving a nearly five-year prison sentence, “Doña Lety” regained control over her criminal cell within 24 months. According to sources close to the investigation, her network has ties with the Sinaloa Cartel and is responsible for attacks on the Quintana Roo Prosecutor’s Office, as well as the execution of business owners and police officers.
The victims of “Doña Lety’s” crime cartel are diverse, including hoteliers, real estate developers, service workers, fishermen, taxi drivers, and even street vendors. Hotel owners have reported being forced to sell and distribute drugs on their premises, with “Doña Lety” collecting a fee from each establishment.
One harrowing account comes from a businessman who managed to escape an armed attack after refusing to participate in the criminal scheme. Félix Manzanares, alias ‘JJ,’ one of the cartel’s accomplices and hitmen, was involved in the attempted ambush.
The Attorney General’s Office has received complaints about “Doña Lety’s” extortion racket, with victims describing how they were forced to pay a biweekly fee for working on the beaches. The complainants identified “Doña Lety” as the leader of the organization and her accomplice, Ángel Fernando Tapia Chávez, alias ‘El Turco.’
The dark side of Cancún’s tourist paradise has been exposed, revealing a web of crime and corruption that threatens the city’s very foundations. The authorities must take swift action to bring “Doña Lety” and her cartel to justice, restoring peace and security to this popular destination.”
