As of February 28, the new drinking water desalination plant in Cabo San Lucas was 32% complete, and 30.17% complete, so the project is expected to be ready for operation in October 2026.

State Water Commission Director Tatiana Davis Monzón did not specify the investment amount, but it is estimated at 1.145 billion pesos.

“The desalination plant has a design capacity of 250 liters per second, and the water treatment method is reverse osmosis.”

Both the water intake and discharge are directly into the sea. The president of the Los Cabos City Council’s Water Commission, Andrés Liceaga, explained that the second seawater desalination plant in Los Cabos is located in the northern part of Cabo San Lucas, confirming that the complete project will be completed in 2026.

“The new plant will produce 250 liters per second for the population of Cabo San Lucas, which will be extracted from the Pacific Ocean.”
He explained that this project is being built through a Public-Private Partnership between Oomsapas Los Cabos and two companies with extensive experience in the construction of desalination plants around the world.

He emphasized that “this plant will help resolve the water shortage in Cabo San Lucas, also improving the water rationing in San José del Cabo,” whose aquifer is currently the main source of supply for both towns.

He mentioned that along with the construction of this project, explorations are being conducted in Cabo San Lucas to locate new wells that can supplement the water supply in Cabo San Lucas, where there is a severe problem of water stress.
