Surprising Waterspout Captured in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora

The formation of a waterspout off the Puerto Peñasco boardwalk, captured on video by local residents and tourists on Monday morning, was confirmed by Luis Armando Flores Oropeza, head of the Municipal Civil Protection and Fire Department.

He explained that this is a natural phenomenon common during this time of year and occurs when a cold front passes through the region or when rainfall occurs.

Luis Armando Flores Oropeza mentioned that this is a natural phenomenon that forms when clouds absorb seawater to form rain. He stated that this is not the first time it has occurred, as it has already formed on other beaches in the state. He also noted that it is associated with cold front number 42, which entered Sonora this morning.

Although this meteorological phenomenon, also known as a flash flood, attracted attention and caused astonishment among those who witnessed it, Flores Oropeza said it poses no risk to the population, as it naturally fades as it approaches the coast.

“We haven’t had any reports; this didn’t generate strong wind gusts either. Some gusts of up to 60 kilometers (per hour) were associated with the region. This was due to the arrival of the cold front, not because of the phenomenon itself, which provides a very beautiful spectacle. Some people who hadn’t seen it were amazed. However, this is the magnitude of this phenomenon, and we didn’t have any impact or problems in the city.”
