Rainfall Leaves Roads Closed and Vehicles Trapped in Sonora; Empalme Records the Highest Accumulation
Heavy rainfall affected several areas of Sonora between August 31 and the early hours of September 1, 2026, prompting authorities to monitor and respond to incidents in different municipalities. No injuries were reported.
According to the consolidated report issued at 7:00 a.m., rainfall was recorded in 32 municipalities. The highest accumulations were reported in Empalme, with 53.8 millimeters, and Álamos, with 53.6 millimeters.
Other significant rainfall totals included Nácori Chico with 41.0 millimeters, Granados with 36.1, Cucurpe with 33.8, Cumpas with 28.0, Huachinera with 22.7, Trincheras with 22.0, Opodepe with 21.5, Átil with 19.3, and Bacanora with 19.0 millimeters.
Road Closures in Empalme
In Empalme, the amount of rainfall caused closures on rural roads, temporarily leaving some communities in the area without normal access. Authorities evaluated the affected sections to determine their condition and coordinate the safe reopening of the roads.
The situation was particularly concerning for rural communities because the affected roads are important connections between these areas and the rest of the municipality.
Incidents in Other Municipalities
San Luis Río Colorado recorded the largest number of urban incidents. Authorities reported 15 electrical short circuits, 11 fallen trees, five reports of fallen cables, three fallen poles, and damage to a roof or structure.
In Trincheras, authorities reported three incidents involving swollen or overflowing streams, as well as two temporary highway closures.
In Nogales, authorities responded to a fallen utility pole and rescued a vehicle that became trapped in a flooded area. In Magdalena, another vehicle became trapped in an inundated area and received assistance.
Meanwhile, Agua Prieta reported a landslide, adding to the problems caused by the rainfall.
Authorities Maintain Monitoring
The State Civil Protection Coordination, together with municipal authorities and other institutions, continued monitoring areas considered vulnerable to flooding and other weather-related incidents.
Special attention was given to restoring access to rural communities in Empalme and monitoring streams and waterways in regions that received the greatest amount of rainfall.
Authorities emphasized that the situation was being monitored to respond to additional incidents that could occur if rainfall continued.
Recommendations for the Public
Because of the continuing possibility of rain, authorities urged residents not to attempt to cross streams, low-water crossings, or flooded areas.
People were also asked to respect road closures and follow instructions issued by emergency and Civil Protection personnel.
In case of an emergency or dangerous situation, residents were urged to immediately call 911.
