The Secretariat for Agri-Food Promotion and Rural Development (Sefader) of the State of Oaxaca confirmed the first case of screwworm infection in a horse in the municipality of Matías Romero Avendaño, following a diagnosis made by the National Service of Agri-Food Health, Safety, and Quality (Senasica).

In response to this case, authorities deployed a team made up of veterinary medical personnel from Senasica and 10 members of the State Committee for the Promotion and Protection of Livestock of the State of Oaxaca, to conduct inspections and detect possible new infections.

Since November 2024, the first case of screwworm infection in Mexico was reported. In response, the Government of Oaxaca and Senasica implemented sanitary measures such as spraying larvicides at livestock movement inspection points, as well as verifying treatment and proof of strapped shipment.

The head of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Livestock (SEFADER), Víctor López Leyva, announced in a statement that more than 65,000 livestock farmers will be trained, especially in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Papaloapan Basin, and coastal regions, “to promptly detect the presence of this worm.”

He also highlighted that surveillance at checkpoints throughout the state has been strengthened.

Authorities urged livestock producers and the general public to report any cases of animals with worms in wounds by calling 800-751-2100.
