Five migrants were rescued by security forces in Tapachula, Chiapas. According to official information, the incident occurred in the central region of the country when an anonymous report was received from migrants who were allegedly being held in a building.
What is known about the kidnapping?
The migrants were in transit to the center of the country when, through deception, they were taken to a building and once there, they were detained. The captors demanded cash from their families in exchange for their release.
How did the authorities intervene?
Once they learned of the situation, authorities mounted a joint operation involving members of the Ministry of National Defense (Defense), the Ministry of the Navy, the National Migration Institute, the National Guard, and the Chiapas State Security Secretariat, who arrived at the building to locate the migrants.
As a result of this operation, five people were rescued, four of them Cuban nationals, identified as Claudia ‘N’, Yanet ‘N’, Ashley ‘N’, and Adrián ‘N’. Another person, a Haitian national, was identified as Woodsy ‘N’.
The rescued individuals were taken to the Attorney General’s Office in the Soconusco region for their initial statement of the events and to verify the extortion situation.
The migrants were subsequently transferred to the National Migration Institute, which will determine whether they will remain in the country or be repatriated to their countries of origin. No one has been arrested so far.
