A proposal by MORENA local representative Jorge Pérez Falconi to exempt motorists from the toll at the Unity Bridge in Isla Aguada has been met with skepticism, with some questioning its validity and potential motives.
According to Froilán Palestino Cruz, state delegate of the National Front of Indigenous Peoples and Marginalized Communities, Pérez Falconi’s initiative is merely a rehash of existing procedures that already allow motorists with Campeche state license plates to exempt themselves from the toll. These procedures include presenting a valid vehicle registration card, vehicle insurance, and proof of ownership as registered with the National Statistics Institute (INE).
Cruz points out that if Pérez Falconi truly intended to benefit the residents of the municipality of Carmen, he should propose that all motorists with Campeche state license plates be granted free passage at the Puente de la Unidad toll booth, similar to the exemption offered at the Zacatal Bridge. This initiative would be easier to approve since the Puente de la Unidad is managed by the state government of Campeche.
The delegate suggests that Pérez Falconi’s real intention may be to seek political prominence rather than genuinely benefit the people of Carmen. He notes that the population no longer wants “magic solutions” or false promises, and instead demands tangible results from their representatives.
Cruz recalls that during Pérez Falconi’s first term as a representative in the last legislative session, he failed to introduce initiatives that would have truly benefited the people of Campeche, such as increasing security. Instead, he introduced proposals that had already been highlighted, which is seen as a sign of lack of interest in genuinely serving the community.
The delegate also criticizes Pérez Falconi for not introducing initiatives that could attract greater resources to the state, particularly for the municipality of Carmen. He suggests that the representative should focus on converting Atasta into an industrial zone and strengthening the Sabancuy region with agroindustry.
Pérez Falconi’s previous proposal for the cleanup of the Caleta remains a contentious issue, as nothing was done about it during his first term, and the area remains contaminated with garbage.
