A wave of violent incidents has swept through various municipalities in the state over the past few days, leaving a trail of death and destruction in its wake. The areas most affected by this surge in insecurity are Campeche, Carmen, Champotón, Escárcega, and Hopelchén.
According to official reports, two people have lost their lives due to firearms attacks, while property damage and the presence of cartel groups have added to the sense of unease among residents. Despite efforts by the State Police, ministerial agents, and the National Guard (GN) to address the issue through operations in Campeche, crimes continue to occur with increasing frequency.
The first incident occurred on May 2 in Champotón when a 30-year-old man was shot five times by an assailant on a motorcycle. The victim died shortly after being hit three times. The attacker fled the scene without facing any consequences.
On May 3, a threatening banner signed by the La Compañía cartel was discovered in a housing project in Ciudad Concordia, Campeche. That same day, Darwin “N” was shot three times by alleged “motorcycle hitmen” in Escárcega and is currently being treated in hospital.
In Champotón, 48 hours after the initial attack, a 55-year-old undertaker identified as J.V.C. was targeted while driving along the Nuevo León Road. His condition remains critical, and it’s worth noting that his business had already been attacked weeks prior to this incident.
On May 6, farmers in Hopelchén discovered a charred body on the Hopelchén-Bolonchén highway in Rejón. The Ministry of Public Safety (Semefo) confirmed that the victim showed signs of torture and was shot in the back of the head with a high-caliber weapon.
Champotón has emerged as the municipality with the highest number of high-impact crimes, including an attack on two funeral home vehicles in the Ulises Sansores and Aserradero neighborhoods. A banner threatening to kill the owner and a Municipal Police commander accused of receiving bribes from drug dealers was left at the scene.
No arrests have been made in connection with these firearm attacks, which are believed to be related to debts or score-settling between criminal groups over the sale of “crystal” (metallic drug).
In addition to these violent incidents, two suicides have also occurred this month: one in the community of Nilchí and another in Carmen. There were also three deaths due to traffic accidents, with two occurring in hospitals after being transported, and one at the scene.
