The municipalities of Tampico and Altamira have guaranteed the donation of land for the federal government’s Housing for Well-being program, a strategy that will help the construction sector maintain activity in the coming years and alleviate the lack of public infrastructure in Tamaulipas.

Following the meeting held last Wednesday with Infonavit Director Octavio Romero Oropeza in the southern region, the development of 45,000 new affordable housing units, costing around 500,000 pesos, is predicted. CMIC delegate Pablo Haro Panduro mentioned this as affordable for the working class. This will mean greater mobility for the organization’s 280 members in this region.

This initiative, inaugurated a few weeks ago in Matamoros, will also be replicated in Reynosa and Nuevo Laredo, in addition to the capital, Ciudad Victoria, contributing to the national goal of building one million low-income housing units. The need in Tamaulipas, according to the latest INEGI census, is for 176,000 homes.

“Tampico has committed to donating a 3,500-square-meter plot of land, a small lot, but considering the limited land reserves in this municipality, vertical developments can be carried out. There is ample space in Altamira, which the authority also assured Infonavit it will provide for the construction of four-story apartments,” noted the state head of the Mexican Chamber of the Construction Industry (CMIC).

These agreements, said the businessman in the sector, were highlighted by mayors Mónica Villarreal and Armando Martínez, who were present at the meeting, which also included Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya, as well as local housing developers belonging to Canadevi. Although the latter have more experience, the members of this business association can support the plan.

“This will be very helpful for us, as we’ve had little construction activity, as public works have so far been under bidding at both the federal and state levels. The benefit also extends to the workers; their lives cost around 500,000 pesos, perhaps with variables, as the increase in steel prices will greatly affect the state’s market. However, for the state market, it’s an affordable amount,” Haro Panduro emphasized.

He pointed out that around 5 percent of the current members have a direct vocation for building all types of homes. The opportunity offered by Infonavit within the program could increase the interest of other business owners in this sector to pursue this line of business.
