With the opening of air service to El Paso, Chihuahua could open more international flights: Economic Development

During the 2025 Binational Tourism Fair, held recently in Tijuana, the upcoming opening of a direct flight between Chihuahua and El Paso, Texas, was announced. This represents a strategic step toward the internationalization of General Roberto Fierro International Airport and a key expansion for regional tourism, industry, and commerce.

José Jordán, Director of Economic Development and Competitiveness for the Municipality, explained that, although the exact start date has not yet been set, the process for this new route is advanced. “With this flight, we seek to increase our connection with the United States, taking advantage of the fact that El Paso connects with multiple international airlines and destinations,” he stated.

This new direct connection with El Paso will allow for better coordination with the west coast of the United States, especially with California. Currently, passengers traveling to cities like Los Angeles must make stopovers in Tijuana, which entails more complicated and lengthy logistics. The new route seeks to eliminate those barriers.

In addition, Jordán reported that an airline is in negotiations to establish its base of operations in the state capital, which would open the possibility of launching new international routes from Chihuahua in the short and medium term.

“We are working to continue connecting Chihuahua with more domestic and international destinations. The goal is to expand the flight offering and attract new investments that strengthen the local economy,” the official stated.

Among the upcoming objectives, he mentioned the need to increase flight frequency to Mexico City and Monterrey, two routes currently operating with over 90% occupancy. He also highlighted the interest in strengthening connections with Querétaro, a city with which Chihuahua maintains a strategic collaboration in the aerospace sector.

During the Tourism Tianguis, current challenges facing the airline industry were also addressed, such as global delays in aircraft deliveries, a situation that has temporarily halted the opening of new routes. However, he expressed optimism regarding a prompt solution that would allow the momentum toward greater connectivity to be maintained.

For their part, the Centro Norte Airport Group (OMA) and local business leaders have actively supported the expansion of international flights from Chihuahua, believing that improved air infrastructure is essential for attracting tourism, boosting economic competitiveness, and consolidating the city as a key logistics hub in the north of the country.

Patricio Barrera mentioned that surveillance points remain in place along various highway sections, with personnel from the Highway Department, Municipal Police, and Civil Protection participating.
“Strengthening air connectivity not only benefits the tourism sector, but also strategic industries that need to optimize their supply chains and expand their markets,” Jordán stated.

With these advances, Chihuahua is positioning itself as a city with a global vision, committed to efficient mobility, innovation, and the opening of new opportunities that place it on the radar of investors, tourists, and companies from around the world.
