The whereabouts of former Cancún mayor Carlos Canabal Ruiz remain unknown after a daring escape from house arrest in this northern Mexican state.
According to reports, the former interim mayor of Cancún fled his apartment on April 26, despite being placed under electronic surveillance and constant police monitoring. Canabal had been granted house arrest due to health concerns, but the move was met with skepticism given the risks associated with removing his tracking device.
In February, Canabal was arrested in Tulum, Quintana Roo, after evading authorities for an unspecified period. However, it wasn’t until May 7 that news of his escape broke, prompting a judge to issue a re-arrest warrant and declare him a fugitive from justice.
Canabal’s tenure as interim mayor of Cancún from 2004 to 2005 was marked by controversy. The Tabasco-born newspaper entrepreneur has been linked to the appropriation of numerous plots of land and properties within the city, sparking several complaints for unjustified dismissals, non-payment of Social Security fees, and staff wages.
The company LV, which suffered a 531 million peso claim filed by former official Xavier Olea Trueheart, had expressed concerns about Canabal’s potential escape prior to his house arrest. The warning proved prophetic as the ex-mayor managed to evade authorities once again.
Eduardo Hernández, Control Judge of the common jurisdiction in Nuevo León, has issued a warrant for Canabal’s re-arrest, and efforts are underway to locate the fugitive former mayor.
Canabal also owns the newspaper La Verdad in several states, including Yucatán and Quintana Roo. His current whereabouts remain unknown as authorities launch an investigation into his escape from house arrest.
