The Chiapas Congress approved the removal of political immunity from Martín Martínez Díaz, the mayor of Ocosingo, who is being investigated for the crimes of carrying weapons and forced disappearance of persons.

Investigations by the Chiapas Attorney General’s Office (FGJ) identify Martínez Díaz (an indigenous Tseltal) as one of the individuals who deprived a person of his liberty last year in the community of Nuevo Paraíso, Ocosingo, and who remains missing to this day.

The Ocosingo mayor is originally from the community of Nueva Palestina, where Cabrero López Segundo, alias “La Cabra,” a criminal leader arrested on March 1 in Tabasco for crimes related to the forced disappearance of persons, carrying weapons, extortion, and bodily harm, had his headquarters.

Along with “La Cabra,” Martínez Díaz allegedly controlled extortion of residents of the Lacandon Jungle. Furthermore, they are linked to participating in the disarming of Army personnel who arrived in the region after receiving reports of the arrival of small planes loaded with drugs. The soldiers were humiliated by a group of residents allegedly led by the now defrocked mayor of Ocosingo.

The Arrest of Martín Martínez

The arrest of Mayor Martín Martínez occurred amid criticism of the Ocosingo Municipal Police for alleged abuse of authority after detaining a fruit vendor who was slow to collect his merchandise during an operation to remove the “peasant market” from public streets.

While the Municipal Government was the target of criticism for the actions of its police, the arrest of Martín Martínez Díaz was confirmed last Saturday, May 3, during an operation involving the Mexican Army and state and federal police.

Authorities arrested the current mayor on the Palenque-Benemérito de las Américas highway, and during an inspection of his belongings and the vehicle he was driving, they found a 9mm firearm with a magazine loaded with 18 live rounds.

Prior to his participation in the June 2024 elections, Martín Martínez Díaz was already identified by residents of the region as one of the criminal leaders involved in trafficking migrants and cattle through the Lacandon Jungle. Therefore, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) is also investigating his possible involvement in federal crimes.
