The erosion of El Recodo Beach has left tourist boat operators without a safe and designated boarding area, forcing them to pick up clients from alternative locations.
According to José Gómez Burgos, secretary of the Caribbean Sea Tourism Cooperative, the lack of a designated space is causing significant issues for both tourists and boat operators. The cooperative had previously utilized designated swimming areas and protective measures for bathers, but erosion and the presence of sargassum have rendered these amenities useless.
“The situation has worsened due to the absence of boulders in the area,” Gómez Burgos stated, highlighting the lack of protection for tourists and boat operators. “We now have only the coast and the sargassum barrier, which hinders our exit and blocks our way out.”
The cooperative is urgently seeking a solution to provide a safe boarding area for tourists, citing the need for a designated space where clients can board boats without obstruction. Gómez Burgos emphasized that a coastal study is currently underway to restore El Recodo Beach and reorganize the affected area.
“We hope this initiative will alleviate the difficult situation we are facing,” he said, expressing optimism that the restoration project will provide a long-term solution for both tourists and boat operators.
The sargassum barrier has further complicated the issue, making it challenging for boats to access the beach and pick up clients. The lack of a designated boarding area has significant implications for the tourism industry in Playa del Carmen, highlighting the need for a prompt resolution to this pressing issue.
