The Morena and Green Ecologist Party of Mexico candidate for mayor of Texistepec, Veracruz, Yesenia Lara Gutiérrez, was murdered during a campaign event on the evening of Sunday, May 11.
She and her supporters were participating in a caravan to promote her campaign proposals and encourage people to vote when unknown assailants shot her.
Governor Rocío Nahle stated that a total of four people died and three were injured during the attack.

On their official Facebook page, they were broadcasting the campaign route, and during the final seconds, multiple gunshots were heard and people were seen running. The broadcast then cut out.
“It’s an honor to be with Yesi today,” shouted her supporters while honking the horns of the motorcycles and vehicles accompanying her. Shots were fired, and everyone tried to turn in the opposite direction.
The march began in the center of Texistepec, a municipality located in the southern state of Veracruz, toward a road that leads to another town hall in the community of Tenochtitlán. The campaign event was about to end when the attack occurred.
Reports from people in the area indicate that she was shot several times, and died immediately at the scene.
At the scene, those accompanying her placed a Morena banner over her to cover her face while authorities arrived to carry out the legal procedures.
The Municipal Police arrived at the scene and cordoned off the scene.
Crime joins Veracruz’s election campaigns
The murder of the Texistepec candidate is the second to occur during the electoral campaigns for the reelection of Veracruz’s municipal councils. The first was in the northern municipality of Coxquihui, in which Germán Anuar Valencia, who was also running for the Morena-PVEM party, was murdered.
