The Chalco–Santa Martha Trolleybus, one of the most important transportation projects in the Valley of Mexico, will be inaugurated on May 18 and promises to transform the mobility of millions of people who travel daily between the State of Mexico and Mexico City.
What is the Chalco-Santa Martha Trolleybus?
This new transportation system will travel over a dedicated elevated viaduct for 18.5 kilometers, directly connecting the municipality of Chalco, in the State of Mexico, with the Santa Martha Metro Line A station in Iztapalapa.
Unlike other routes, this trolleybus will not share lanes with other vehicles, ensuring a smooth, traffic-free, and backup-free journey. The project was promoted by the federal, state, and Mexico City governments as part of a plan to improve connectivity in the eastern part of the Valley of Mexico.
How many people will it benefit?
The Chalco-Santa Martha Trolleybus will benefit more than 3 million residents who live and work in this metropolitan area. With a capacity to transport 120,000 passengers daily, the new trolleybus will significantly reduce travel times.
Currently, the trip between Chalco and Iztapalapa can take up to 2 hours due to traffic congestion. With this new system, the same trip will be made in just 35 minutes, representing a time saving of more than 70%.
Chalco-Santa Martha Trolleybus Stations
The route will have 15 stations strategically distributed from Santa Martha to downtown Chalco. These are the confirmed stops:

Where does the Trolleybus connect to Mexico City?
The direct connection to Mexico City will be through the Santa Martha Metro station, located on Line A. This intermodality will allow users to easily transfer to other Metro lines and various public transportation services, facilitating access to areas such as the Historic Center and the southern and northern areas of the capital.
In addition, this project is expected to help reduce congestion on other modes of transportation such as the Metrobús, RTP, peseros, and minibuses, thus improving the quality of life for millions of people.
Technology, efficiency, and sustainability
The elevated trolleybus is not only fast and efficient, but also environmentally friendly, as it runs on electric power, contributing to the reduction of polluting emissions in the region.
Each unit will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology, accessibility for people with disabilities, and video surveillance cameras for increased security.
A historic change for the eastern part of the Valley of Mexico
This project represents an unprecedented transformation in mobility between the State of Mexico and Mexico City, especially in historically neglected areas such as Chalco, Valle de Chalco, and Iztapalapa. With this new infrastructure, users will be able to travel faster, with greater comfort and safety.
