While Durango climbed one position in the overall state ranking from 2023 to 2024, Coahuila lost one position, primarily due to indicators related to violent crime and organized crime. However, the Durango state showed a higher score on the fear of violence indicator, implying a higher perception of insecurity.
Yucatan, Coahuila, and Durango were the three states that recorded a low homicide rate in 2024. Yucatan has consistently recorded the lowest rate in the country every year since 2015. In 2024, the homicide rate in Yucatan was 2.2 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, while Coahuila’s was 3.9 and Durango’s was 4.1.
By municipality, Gómez Palacio and Durango rank second with the lowest homicide rate per 100,000 inhabitants, with four reported cases; Lerdo ranks seventh (four cases); and Torreón ranks 21st, with 31 reported cases. In this case, the municipal homicide rate was estimated by adjusting the case rate based on discrepancies at the state level between the number of victims and the number of reported cases, and only municipalities with a population of at least 150,000 were included.
The IEP study also reports that since 2015, domestic violence has increased 102 percent nationwide, from 363 to 735 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Last year was the sixth consecutive year in which Colima recorded the worst domestic violence rate in the country.
Since 2015, Colima has experienced the greatest deterioration in this sub-indicator, with a rate that has more than quintupled in the last decade. Coahuila, Mexico City, Querétaro, and Sinaloa showed the next greatest deterioration, with rates that doubled, and in the case of Coahuila, they quadrupled.
