What seemed like a peaceful afternoon spending time with rescued animals ended in a scare for the mayor of García, Nuevo León, Manuel Guerra Cavazos, who was bitten by a lion that had recently been seized by his administration.

The incident occurred while the mayor was petting the feline on a farm where it and other animals are being kept. The bite caused a wound on the ring finger of his right hand, for which he was hospitalized and received 12 stitches, according to Telediario.

Despite the painful incident, Guerra Cavazos downplayed the animal’s aggressiveness and asserted that the lion had no intention of harming him.

“It was just an issue with a lion, it was just the saturation, everything was fine, everything was fine. They’re very good, these animals are beautiful, it’s just that they don’t measure their strength,” the mayor expressed.

Citizens’ Concern

The news generated surprise and concern among citizens, especially after the mayor himself shared a photo from the hospital bed, where he appears holding his wife’s hand.

“And yes, that’s me, here I am with Pau, everything is fine, my beautiful people, I’ll tell you later,” he wrote on social media.

He wasn’t the only person affected by the incident.

Hours later, the mayor reappeared on social media with another photo. This time, he revealed that his wife fainted upon learning of the accident.

“She was taking care of me and ended up fainting. Both of us are fine now, gad! I love you, beautiful!” Guerra Cavazos shared, confirming that both were in stable condition.

The situation reopened the debate about human interaction with wild animals, even in rescue or shelter settings, as well as the need for strict protocols to ensure both human safety and animal welfare.
