The staff at the 30-bed IMSS-Bienestar Hospital in Ciudad Ixtepec, Oaxaca, has suspended services due to a severe shortage of medications and basic supplies, and power outages.

Martín Ramírez, a union leader at the hospital, reported that they lack gloves, bandages, syringes, laboratory reagents, and functioning emergency equipment.

We lack the most basic supplies to care for patients: gloves, bandages, syringes, IVs, glucometers, and other essential supplies. Furthermore, our emergency room is not working, which puts patients’ lives at risk when the power goes out, something that happens constantly in this area.”

— Martín Ramírez, union leader.

18 union delegates will meet to agree on the actions they will take to demand better working conditions and patient care.

Since the transition to IMSS-Bienestar in June 2024, the hospital has faced critical shortages. “In what world do these officials live who come out every morning to tell us that we are better off in terms of health now than when Seguro Popular was in operation? Does no one tell them that there are not even sheets for the beds in the hospitals?” asked Edgar Carrasco, union representative.

The workers announced mobilizations to demand an immediate solution to these failures that affect medical care throughout the Isthmus region, an area with a high demand for health services.
