Mexico-Italy Alliance Strengthens Protection of Cultural Heritage

To recognize bilateral progress in the restitution of cultural heritage, a formal ceremony was held at the National Museum of Anthropology, led by authorities from the Mexican and Italian governments.

The event was held to highlight the results achieved through institutional cooperation in the recovery of archaeological, historical, and ethnographic artifacts that had been removed from Mexico and located abroad.

The Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Juan Ramón de la Fuente; the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic, Antonio Tajani; and the Director General of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), Diego Prieto Hernández, led the event.

Cultural Heritage: Cooperation in Action

During the event, it was highlighted that, from 2019 to date, approximately 800 archaeological, historical, and ethnographic artifacts from Italy have been recovered. This event was made possible through collaboration with the Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Carabinieri Arms.

Secretary De la Fuente recognized Italy as a strategic partner in the defense of cultural heritage and reaffirmed the Mexican State’s commitment to strengthening the international legal framework in this area. He also highlighted the importance of multilateral forums for expanding cooperation with other nations.

Representing the Ministry of Culture, the Director General of the National Institute of Anthropology and History noted that cultural heritage constitutes a set of elements with historical and symbolic value for communities. He noted that Mexico has had specific legislation for the protection of these assets since 1972.

To conclude the event, a representative exhibition of pieces repatriated from Italy was inaugurated, consisting of a dozen objects originating from the current states of Jalisco, Nayarit, and Veracruz. This exhibition symbolizes the results achieved within the framework of international cooperation for the protection of cultural heritage.
