Port of Tampico reliefs put tourism reconversion on hold

Changes in management at Asipona Tampico have put the Tampico Port Reconversion project on hold, while business leaders say it’s time to push it forward with the arrival of tourist vessels.

Benjamín Hernández Rodríguez, Secretary of Tourism of Tamaulipas, stated from the south of the state that “the Reconversion of the Port of Tampico is on hold; they just changed the director of Asipona.”

After the historic seizure of fuel theft at the Port of Tampico, the departure of Rubén Alfonso Vargas Suárez was recently made official, and Jaime Herrera Romo took over as director of Asipona.

“There was a proposal to do things a little differently than they had been. Once I sit down with the new director of Asipona, we’ll be able to share updates on this issue, because he will have a different way of working than before, or perhaps it will be the same, but we need him to set the tone for us.”

Regarding the extension with the business owners who had previously spoken, I have stated that the bidding process remains ongoing, “but we’ll see what plans are in place with the director.”

What do business owners think about the Tampico redevelopment project?

Hotel owners say it’s a necessary project and are also waiting to speak with the Asipona authorities.

Jorge Marón Ceja, president of the Mexican Hotel Association of Southern Tamaulipas, indicated that it is important to move the project forward, as they have proven attractive due to the Pánuco River.

“It’s quite important to us that we’ve been pushing this project for many years. The port authorities are convinced it’s a good opportunity to boost the area.

The businessman explained that they hope “it can be something historic. We already had the Yaqui, and the truth is that it was very important for the entire tourism industry, as it was well received.”

Over the weekend, the Venezuelan training ship “Simón Bolívar” departed, generating an influx of visitors and tourists exceeding 22,000 in just five days.

“Perhaps later, there will be the possibility of attracting cruise ships to explore our area, which would be very important for Tampico’s economy,” the businessman stated.
