Traveling from Mexico City to Monterrey for just 30 pesos is no longer a fantasy: it’s a reality thanks to the arrival of Flix, the German company that has just burst onto the scene in the competitive Mexican bus transportation market. With a focus on technology, accessibility, and safety, Flix promises to revolutionize the way people travel between cities in the country and international destinations.

The platform is now allowing people to purchase tickets for travel starting next Tuesday, May 27th. The route: Mexico City-Monterrey, with promotional prices starting at 30 pesos for a limited time, and routes that extend to more than 1,600 destinations in the United States and Canada, thanks to its integration with Greyhound.

The company is German-born and has been in the global market for 10 years, transporting more than 400 million passengers and serving 6,800 destinations worldwide.

Low Cost

“For years, bus travel in Mexico has been expensive, with little innovation and no real connectivity options. Flix is here to change that,” commented Carlos Magaña, the company’s general manager, in an interview with El Economista.

According to his analysis, Mexico is the third-largest bus transportation market in the world, where 95% of trips are made by bus. Therefore, “it is a market with great potential. In a comparative analysis, the average price of a bus ride in Mexico is 1,222 pesos, which is 37% more expensive than in the United States, 59% more expensive than in Brazil, 84% more expensive than France, 184% more expensive than India, 205% more expensive than Chile, 211% more expensive than Germany, and they are different economies.”

He explained that the business model combines German technology, partnerships with local operators, and an optimized cost structure. The result: fares up to 40% lower than those of the traditional market, without sacrificing safety or comfort.

El Economista reviewed the FlixBus app and found that it is now on sale, departing from Mexico City from Buenavista (San Pedro Santa Clara) or from Fórum Buenavista and arriving in Monerrey at the Escobedo and Los Titanes stations. The confirmed cost is 30 pesos per trip, which, incidentally, takes approximately 3:30 p.m.

Routes and Destinations

Magaña explained that the first phase will include transfers from Mexico City to Monterrey and Monterrey to Torreón. It will have three terminals in Mexico City, Monterrey, and Torreón, and 13 connections. It will also have five intermediate stops: Mexico City, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Matehuala, and Monterrey, with up to five daily departures and more than 560 monthly trips. And the best part: all trips can be booked online from the Flix mobile app or its website, with the option to modify or cancel up to 15 minutes before the trip, the executive said.

He explained that onboard, passengers enjoy free Wi-Fi, power outlets, restrooms, air conditioning, and comfortable seats with extra space. All supported by cutting-edge technology, including a Traffic Control Center, smart cameras, and real-time GPS tracking that allows each unit to be monitored and any unforeseen events to be anticipated.

Mexico connected to North America

He said that one of the biggest advantages is that Flix, since its first day of operation, has connected Mexico with cities such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Toronto. This is possible thanks to the partnership with Greyhound, making Flix the first international operator to offer this level of connectivity from Mexico.

We have already received the first reservation from a passenger traveling from Ontario, Canada, to Mexico City. That is the dimension of the change we are promoting,” said Magaña.

Boosting tourism and SMEs

The executive said that Flix signed an agreement with the Ministry of Tourism to use the “Mexico” brand in its campaigns, as part of its commitment to democratizing tourism and promoting local destinations. The company seeks to facilitate family, cultural, and work mobility throughout the country.

He explained that its model is based on alliances with small and medium-sized Mexican operators, who operate the routes while Flix handles the strategy, technology, and marketing. This allows many local companies to compete on equal terms with the large groups in the sector.

Terminals

The operation begins with terminals in Buenavista (Mexico City) and a renovated station in Monterrey, which already operated under Greyhound and was modernized by Flix for this new phase. The departure flag will be given there on May 27, with the first passengers boarding under the new brand.
