Mérida Residents Fed Up with Constant Blackouts in Las Américas Neighborhood

Residents of Mérida’s Las Américas neighborhood are growing increasingly frustrated with constant power outages that have become a regular occurrence in their community.

According to Beatriz Vidal, a resident of the neighborhood, blackouts have been happening several times a week, with some lasting as long as 24 hours. The frequent disruptions have caused significant inconvenience and disruption to daily routines.

The situation has worsened recently due to construction of a new supermarket on one of the neighborhood’s main avenues, according to Vidal. She claims that since construction began, power outages have become more frequent.

The lack of electricity also affects the water supply in the subdivision, as cisterns and hydraulic pumps rely on electricity to function. Rafael Olmo, another resident of Las Américas, explained that when the power goes out, residents lose access to clean water for basic needs like washing dishes, bathing, and using toilets.

“This is not a livable situation,” said Olmo. “We can’t wash our hands, bathe, or go to the bathroom. We can’t live this way anymore.”

Residents have tried to contact representatives of the construction company responsible for the subdivision, but according to Olmo, they have not received any formal explanation or taken responsibility for the power outages.

The residents are demanding that the company explain what measures it took to prevent power grid overloads and take accountability for the frequent blackouts. If their demands are not met, they may resort to further action, including closing access to vehicles to the residential area.

“This is just the beginning,” said Olmo. “We will continue to protest until our voices are heard.”
