The Mexico 2025 Peace Index, prepared by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), ranks Durango as the third most peaceful state in the country, surpassed only by Yucatán and Tlaxcala.
This recognition highlights the effectiveness of the security policies implemented in the state, and particularly in municipalities like Gómez Palacio.
In 2024, Durango recorded a homicide rate of 4.1 per 100,000 inhabitants, ranking among the lowest nationally, while Gómez Palacio ranked second among municipalities with the lowest homicide rate, at 1.14 per 100,000 inhabitants.
In this regard, City Secretary José Ángel Mascorro Muñoz emphasized that a great effort has been made to care for and protect the population of Gómez Palacio, in coordination with the Mexican Army, the National Guard, and the various police forces in the State of Durango.
He stated that with actions such as the reinstatement of the Rural Police and the Immediate Reaction Operational Group, the improvement in security is not limited to urban areas, as increased patrols and police presence have inhibited crime throughout the municipality.
He highlighted strategies such as Operation Dragon, Citizen Security Committees, Purple Points, and Safe Fortnight, among others, which he emphasized have led to significant and permanent decreases in the incidence of multiple crimes.
He highlighted the number of femicides recorded; Since only one was recorded last year, “and we continue working under the instructions of Mayor Leticia Herrera Ale to prevent these types of cases,” said Mascorro Muñoz.
For his part, Municipal Police Director Luis Alberto Duarte Vázquez shared some favorable figures obtained from the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection: in terms of intentional homicides, a 44 percent decrease was achieved in 2023 compared to 2022 and a further 50 percent decrease in 2024 compared to 2023.
In home burglaries, a 70.4 percent decrease was recorded in 2023 compared to 2022 and a 70.5 percent decrease in 2024 compared to 2023.
In business burglaries, there was a 78.2 percent decrease in 2023 compared to 2022 and a 12.3 percent decrease in 2024. percent, compared to 2023.
Regarding vehicle theft, in 2023 the reduction was 55.6 percent compared to 2022, and in 2024, 36.5 percent compared to 2023.
Finally, the City Secretary noted that they will continue working every day on all these strategies that have worked and have allowed for a peaceful Gómez Palacio and a State of Durango among the three best-positioned entities in this and other areas.
