State and municipal tourism authorities announced that they are working on creating new sporting events in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, with the goal of consolidating the beach community as a key destination for sports tourism, an activity that has proven to generate significant economic benefits.
The Secretary of Tourism in Guerrero, Simón Quiñones Orozco, reported that they are well advanced and are already evaluating what type of competition could be added this year, in coordination with AS Deporte, the organizer of the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Triathlon. Details will be revealed in the coming weeks, the official announced.
He emphasized that the economic impact of these events goes beyond the number of participants, as most of them arrive accompanied by family members, who eat in restaurants, stay in hotels, shop at local businesses, and use public transportation. Furthermore, the majority of visitors are high-net-worth visitors.
Currently, the destination boasts two iconic sporting events: the Ixtapa Triathlon and the Xtrail Race, as well as local and state competitions in basketball, volleyball, swimming, cycling, and other disciplines that strengthen tourism in the region.
