Alert in San Luis Potosí due to an increase in the brown recluse spider

7

Health authorities in Mexico have issued a preventive measure due to the increase in cases related to the brown recluse spider, a species whose venom can cause severe damage if not treated promptly. At least eight recent cases have been reported in Puebla, and in Sonora, a young woman died after being bitten during Holy Week.

In San Luis Potosí, rising temperatures have triggered local alerts, as this spider’s activity tends to intensify during the hot season. Authorities recommend extreme caution inside the home, especially in dark, untraveled corners, where these arachnids tend to hide.

The brown recluse spider measures between 1.8 and 3 cm, has six eyes, eight legs, and is brown or gray in color. Although not aggressive, it can bite if threatened. Its venom contains enzymes that destroy tissue, so it is recommended to seek medical attention immediately if symptoms such as redness, swelling, or severe pain occur.

Recommendations to prevent bites:

Keep your home clean and free of unnecessary clutter.
Seal cracks and crevices where arachnids can enter.
Check clothing before wearing it, especially if it has been stored.
Shake out shoes and blankets before putting them on or using them.
Avoid storing items in dark or low-traffic corners.
Wear gloves when moving items stored for a long time.
