The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has closed the construction of real estate developments on the Oaxaca coast due to damage to the mangrove ecosystem and forest areas.
In a statement, it specified that one of the projects affected the mangrove ecosystem at Agua Blanca Beach, and a second project affected forest vegetation at Estacahuite Beach.
At Agua Blanca Beach, the total temporary closure was imposed on an area of 124 square meters, “where real estate development works and activities affecting mangroves are being carried out in the municipality of Santa María Tonameca.”
The second total temporary closure was imposed on Estacahuite Beach, located in Puerto Ángel, in San Pedro Pochutla, for land use change works and activities in forest areas affecting an area of 1,933.22 square meters.
Profepa recalled that mangroves are protected by NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, which refers to the protection of native species at risk, and by NOM-022-SEMARNAT-2003, which establishes specifications for the preservation, conservation, sustainable use, and restoration of coastal wetlands in mangrove areas.
