While Coahuila and the rest of the northern part of the country remain free of the screwworm, the Federal Government is in talks with the United States to resume exports, said Alfredo Padilla Esparza.

The delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture in Coahuila commented that progress is being made in the strategy to contain the spread of the screwworm and that cases of infected cattle are declining.

“Since October 2024, in the southern part of the country, the National Service of Health, Safety, and Agrifood Quality (Senasica) has inspected and preventively treated more than 600,000 head of cattle. This requires strict control over livestock movement, with more than 10,000 shipments of cattle inspected.

“This is in addition to ongoing epidemiological surveillance at 10 verification and inspection points in Chiapas, Campeche, Tabasco, and Veracruz, training for producers and veterinarians, health education, and the constant dispersal of sterile flies. To date, nearly one billion sterile flies have been dispersed,” he said.

In addition, ongoing inspection campaigns are maintained in all affected or at-risk areas. When an outbreak is detected, a quarantine zone of at least 20 kilometers is immediately established to prevent its spread.

The results we have today are encouraging, but we are not letting our guard down. We will continue working responsibly, scientifically, and with commitment to eradicate the worm.” The Ministry of Agriculture has maintained ongoing dialogue with its counterparts in the United States since the border closure.

“Talks are ongoing, and we will report when appropriate. We are confident that cattle exports will resume soon because the northern border is protected.

The health strategy has been strengthened in all exporting states to decisively prevent any attempt to spread the cattle screwworm.”
