The Firefly Season 2025 event, which will take place from June 20 to August 10 in the forests of Nanacamilpa and Calpulalpan, Tlaxcala, will attract more than 110,000 visitors, with an influx of international visitors primarily from Canada, Europe, and Asia, who will generate an estimated economic impact of 60 million pesos, revealed Lorena Cuéllar Cisneros, governor of Tlaxcala, in a press conference from Mexico City.

The economic benefits will translate into improvements for local communities, with investments aimed at strengthening tourism infrastructure, professionalizing services, and comprehensive environmental conservation programs. These resources will enhance the quality of the tourist experience while preserving the ecosystem that makes this natural spectacle possible, according to Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur).

Fireflies in Danger in Tlaxcala

“The forests of Nanacamilpa and Calpulalpan are becoming an example of sustainable community tourism.” The 2025 firefly season is part of a sustainable promotion and responsible regulation strategy. In coordination with the Government of Tlaxcala and the involved municipalities, work is being done to disseminate the regulations for visitors, raise visitor awareness, and protect the natural sanctuary.

Tlaxcala will be endorsed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as the eighth community tourism guide in the country, which will directly benefit local communities, authorities announced.

Tourists will be able to witness the results of a collective effort “that cares, protects, and loves, because this natural event would not be possible without the commitment of communities, certified guides, and families who have made ecotourism a source of well-being and dignity,” the governor stated.
