Tampico’s crocodiles are one of the municipality’s icons. Everyone has heard of the “juanchos,” as they are nicknamed by locals and tourists.

Although they are an icon of the southern region and have been photographed or featured in videos on social media on more than one occasion, the reality is that they have also been the subject of tragic incidents that have put authorities on alert.

What will they do with the crocodiles captured in the southern region?

In order to regulate the crocodile overpopulation in southern Tamaulipas, especially in the lagoons, the Tamaulipas government is implementing a measure that involves relocating some of the lizards in Tampico to the municipality of Casas.

In June, a decision will be made on how many Tampico crocodiles will be transferred to the Environmental Management Unit located in the municipality of Casas, as well as the measures under which they will be relocated.

Why are the crocodiles being removed from Tampico?

Yahaira Cruz, director of ecology in Tampico, mentioned that the relocation of the crocodiles to the municipality of Casas is a necessary measure to prevent further incidents caused by the species’ overpopulation.

It’s worth mentioning that crocodiles move away from their habitat in search of territory or food, and this is when incidents with humans begin to occur. For this reason, some of them will be relocated to also protect the species.

What are Civil Protection’s recommendations?

Although the measure seeks to protect humans and the species, preventing crocodile overpopulation will take time. It’s also important to mention that citizens are also responsible for acting responsibly to avoid putting themselves in danger.

If you come across a crocodile, Civil Protection and the authorities advise you to avoid feeding and approaching them, and to report any sightings of the species outside of their habitat immediately.
