Two foreigners disappeared on the afternoon of Sunday, May 25, after being swept away by the sea at Punta Zicatela beach, in the jurisdiction of the tourist destination of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. Civil Protection authorities and lifeguards conducted a search.

According to reports from authorities, the two tourists entered the sea during the afternoon/evening in an area unsuitable for swimming, as the waves were high due to the swell.

The tourists were identified as Chris Ankele, approximately 40 years old, originally from the United States, and Braydon Bretzer, 31 years old, from Canada.

With the support of boats, specialized water rescue personnel, and personnel from the Directorate of Fisheries and Nautical Services, the search and location of the tourists continued.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, May 27, the municipal authority of San Pedro Mixtepec reported that, as a result of the search efforts carried out this morning, the Oaxaca State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) confirmed the location of the body of one of the two tourists reported missing.

They indicated that the body is a 31-year-old Canadian citizen, who was found dead in the maritime zone located at coordinates 15.8537° north latitude and 97.0733° west longitude.

“Search efforts continue to determine the whereabouts of the second tourist, following the protocols established in the search plan at sea,” the local authority reported.
