Through its consular network, Mexico has implemented protection mechanisms for its nationals in the United States. The announcement was made amid tension over the raids carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the state of California.
On the social media accounts of the Mexican Consul General in Los Angeles, Carlos González Gutiérrez, it was announced that the Mexican consular network in the United States has activated a mechanism to provide consular assistance and protection to individuals detained in the raids.
“Through its consular network, we have immediately activated consular assistance and protection mechanisms to ensure that our detained nationals receive adequate legal counsel and fair treatment,” reads the official’s verified account.
In another message, González Gutiérrez called on the Mexican community in California to “remain calm and, if they demonstrate, do so peacefully.” Likewise, she reaffirmed her support for President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, as well as for the defense of migrant rights.
Mexico expresses concern over raids in the United States
The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) has activated consular assistance and protection mechanisms following recent operations carried out by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in various cities across the United States, including Los Angeles, California. These actions have resulted in the detention of migrants, including Mexican citizens, prompting an immediate response from the Mexican government. According to the SRE, the goal is to ensure that detained Mexicans receive adequate legal counsel and fair treatment.
According to the SRE, the Mexican government has intensified the efforts of its consular network to inform the Mexican community about their rights and the measures they can take if they are affected by immigration operations. Furthermore, a call has been made to U.S. authorities to ensure that immigration procedures are carried out respecting due process, human dignity, and the rule of law. This message underscores Mexico’s concern about practices that, according to the government, criminalize migration and jeopardize the safety of Mexican communities in the United States.
The raids sparked discontent.
The SRE statement also reaffirms the Mexican government’s commitment to protecting the human rights of its citizens abroad, regardless of their immigration status. In this context, Mexico has indicated that it will continue to use all available diplomatic and legal channels to express its dissatisfaction with actions it considers harmful to its citizens.
The Mexican government’s position includes a call to address migration from a comprehensive and humane perspective, promoting regional co-responsibility. According to the SRE, Mexico is willing to collaborate with the United States government in the search for solutions that prioritize respect for human rights, the rule of law, and shared development.
