US authorities revoked the visa of the mayor of Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Óscar Castro, as he attempted to cross the border with his family. The measure was applied despite the mayor’s denial months earlier that his visa had been revoked.
The information was provided by journalist Alberto Sanchez, through a post on his personal X account, on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 11. If confirmed, he would be added to the list of officials under investigation by the United States.
Is Óscar Castro’s visa revoked?
According to initial reports, the mayor, affiliated with Morena, attempted to cross the border through the Mexican city of San Luis Río Colorado. However, after an investigation, US authorities withheld the documents of both the municipal governor and his family.
“His visa was revoked when he crossed the SLRC border yesterday. The mayor was traveling with family members, whose documents were also seized (…) This resulted from an investigation by the Rocaport official,” the journalist specified in his post.
So far, the mayor’s office at Puerto Peñasco City Hall has not issued a statement or position on this situation.
Internet users recalled that last May, the mayor made a video in which he expressed his frustration and denied the revocation of his visa.
This is not the first time a Mexican politician has had their visa revoked. Simón Levy, former Undersecretary of Tourism, stated that the Department of Justice is investigating several Mexican officials, who could face visa cancellation, as allegedly occurred with Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila and her husband.
Levy published a list of officials allegedly under investigation on X, including the governors of Tamaulipas, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Sinaloa; two secretaries of state linked to the Gulf Cartel; Clara Luz Flores of the Ministry of the Interior; and Senator Adán Augusto López.
