As part of the protests against US President Donald Trump, US and Mexican citizens demonstrated this Saturday at the US embassy on Paseo de la Reforma.

“Stop fascism!” “Out with racism!” and “Trump Out!” were some of their slogans.

The protesters marched from Plaza Luis Cabrera in the Roma neighborhood to the U.S. Embassy, which is protected by fences. There, they demanded that the U.S. government “stop the violence against Mexican migrants and against Americans themselves.”

Gretchen Kuhner, director of the Institute for Women in Migration (IMUMI), who personally attended the protest as a U.S. citizen and permanent resident in Mexico, expressed her concern about the situation in general and particularly about the “criminalization of migration.”

The administration “is trying to incite violence” in the context of the protests against anti-immigrant raids in Los Angeles, California. “Instead of sending public security to protect people, they sent the National Guard and even Marines to incite violence and try to continue dividing people.”

She noted that what we are experiencing in the United States “is not democracy; democracies need it.” A lot of participation and care.” Furthermore, it seems that “many don’t understand the right to freedom of expression and assembly.”

At the demonstration, participants, including religious leaders, carried flags of both countries and signs with messages such as: “Neither kings nor masters,” “Don’t let Trump divide,” and “We rice up to stop Trump.” Several motorists, seeing the reason for the protest, honked their horns to show their support.

Edgar López, president of Democrats Abroad—the organizer of the mobilization—called for unity and resistance to “stop Trump, restore human rights, and protect our people.” He noted that the protests were also being replicated in other Mexican states such as Yucatán and Jalisco.
