A case of screwworm infestation has been confirmed on a ranch in Valladolid, marking the first reported incidence of the disease in eastern Yucatán.
According to Mario Esteban López Meneses, president of the Eastern Yucatán Regional Livestock Union (UGROY), the situation is being closely monitored and cattle ranchers are taking precautions to prevent further infections.
“It was expected that screwworm would eventually appear in eastern Yucatán,” said López Meneses. “However, we have measures in place to contain the spread of the disease.”
To combat the infestation, non-sterile fly traps are being placed in affected areas. These traps capture flies and allow sterile ones to be released, which do not produce larvae that can infect cattle wounds.
The Yucatán Ministry of Rural Development has intensified its efforts to contain the pest, with eight reported cases currently identified in the state – seven in cattle and one in a dog.
