The rains recorded across much of the Sierra Alta mountain range caused the asphalt surface of one lane of the Mexico-Tampico federal highway to begin collapsing on Thursday, June 19th, at kilometer 104 of the area known as “Cumbres de Alumbres” between the municipalities of Zacualtipán de Ángeles and Molango de Escamilla.
The Zacualtipán Municipality’s Civil Protection Department reported that they had responded to the scene and cordoned off the damaged area to prevent motorists from falling due to the softening of the ground.
In addition, rescuers in this rescue area urged all drivers of private vehicles and public transportation to drive with extreme caution, as rocks, tree branches, and earth continue to fall due to the rains, which could cause an accident on the Mexico-Tampico federal highway, specifically between Zacualtipán and Tehuetlán.
The Civil Protection (PC) Department of the municipality of Tlanchinol confirmed the report of a landslide and rockslides in more than one lane of the Mexico-Tampico federal highway, specifically near the area known as Quetzaltzongo. A crew was dispatched to remove and clean the asphalt in this mountainous area.
Meanwhile, the Civil Protection Coordination of the Undersecretariat of Government in the Huasteca Hidalguense region reported that after a survey and damage assessment, falling rocks, tree branches, and earth persisted on the Huejutla-Atlapexco highway, the access slope to Huautla, as well as in Xochiatipan, Yahualica, Jaltocán, and San Felipe Orizatlán. Authorities from the Huejutla City Council reported that they have set up 13 temporary shelters in the towns of Ixcatlán, Tehuetlan, Coacuilco, Santa Cruz, Coco Grande, Coco Chico, Los Horcones, and the municipal capital itself.
