The Federal Highways and Bridges Administration of Revenue and Related Services announced on June 25 that “soon” most lanes at its toll plazas would stop accepting cash payments and would operate exclusively with the TAG IAVE (Tag IAVE), as part of a national modernization strategy called “Cero Casectivo” (Zero Cash).

“At Capufe, we’re modernizing for you. Payment in most of our toll plaza lanes will soon be with TAG only, which will allow for faster crossings. Purchase your IAVE in advance and join the change. Speed up your crossing with IAVE,” the agency reported.

Although some lanes would still be available for cash payments, these would be in the minority. Given this, CAPUFE recommended that motorists purchase the TAG IAVE in advance, a prepaid device that was installed on the vehicle’s windshield and allowed for automatic fare collection without having to stop.

“The change is part of a technological transformation to make highways more efficient, agile, and safer,” he emphasized, also encouraging users to facilitate their transit by using the electronic payment system.

The IAVE TAG cost 80 pesos, VAT included, and could be purchased directly online through the official CAPUFE website: https://iave.capufe.gob.mx:8080/TiendaIAVE. To obtain it, you must fill out a form with your personal information, choose the delivery location, and confirm the order.

In addition to the IAVE, other electronic payment devices such as PASE and TeleVía would also be accepted, operating under prepaid or postpaid schemes linked to bank accounts, or through top-ups at authorized stores.

These TAGs could also be purchased and activated at service modules installed on various highways across the country, as well as at commercial establishments such as OXXO, Walmart, Soriana, City Market, 7-Eleven, Radio Shack, and Office Depot. Activation could also be done online, by phone, or in person.
