Trump targets Mexican truckers: They face sanctions for not speaking English in the US

Truck drivers for Mexican companies transiting through the United States have received warnings in recent weeks for not being fluent in English.

However, some have been removed from circulation and some have even had their visas revoked.

This comes after the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) tightened requirements for cargo operators entering the country, a measure that, despite not being new, has been further increased under President Donald Trump’s administration.

The regulation requires commercial truck drivers to be able to read road signs, answer questions from officers, and communicate effectively in English during inspections. It is expected to officially go into effect on June 25.

However, Manuel Sotelo Suárez, national vice president of the National Chamber of Cargo Transportation (CANACAR), confirmed that several operators have been removed from circulation in recent weeks, and that in Laredo, Texas, some drivers have lost their B1 visas for not complying with this regulation.

English Classes for Drivers

He said that although no vehicles have been immobilized in Ciudad Juárez, several local companies have received warnings, so they have begun offering English classes to drivers in order to anticipate possible sanctions.

He noted that failure to comply with this implementation not only entails sanctions for drivers, but also the possibility of fines and audits by U.S. authorities.

Sotelo noted that the impacts could be serious, especially for businesses that depend on the daily crossing between Mexico and the United States.
