Mexico is considering suing SpaceX, billionaire Elon Musk’s space company, and President Claudia Sheinbaum explains why.

“An international review is being conducted to determine what laws are being violated, and from there, we will initiate a process,” the president said during her morning press conference.

The president indicated this Wednesday that her government is considering a possible lawsuit against Elon Musk’s company for the potential environmental and safety impacts resulting from the rocket launch in the Tamaulipas border area.

The president was referring to the explosion of the SpaceX Starship rocket that a few days ago directly impacted the Tamaulipas coast, generating garbage and hazardous waste.

Sheinbaum noted that, together with members of her cabinet, they are reviewing everything related to the rocket launch in an area very close to the US-Mexico border, and the safety and environmental impacts of these actions, in order to initiate the corresponding lawsuits.

“We are reviewing it not only to conduct a thorough review, but also everything related to the launch of rockets very close to our border, the impacts it has on the area, and, within the framework of international law, to make the necessary demands that need to be made,” he emphasized.

On June 18, SpaceX’s Starship rocket exploded on the launch pad in Boca Chica, Texas, three kilometers from the Mexican border.

After takeoff, the booster separated and, upon re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere, exploded, disintegrating into hundreds of pieces that fell into the Gulf of Mexico. Ocean currents carried them to Bagdad Beach in Matamoros, raising concerns among environmentalists and local authorities.

The debris, mainly fragments of rubber, plastic, silicone, aluminum, cooling tanks, and containers used in the launch, were removed by authorities. However, environmentalists expressed concern about the microscopic space debris that may have been scattered along the coast.

Thus, Mexico is considering suing SpaceX, the space company owned by billionaire Elon Musk, and President Claudia Sheinbaum explains why.
