During the hot season, scorpion stings increase significantly in several regions of the country. According to data from the Ministry of Health, Mexico records more than 250,000 cases annually, making it the country with the highest incidence of stings in the world. The most affected states are those where climatic and housing conditions favor the presence of these arachnids.
Nayarit.
Jalisco.
Guerrero.
Durango.
Although most stings are not fatal, the most vulnerable are children, the elderly, and people with chronic conditions. In these cases, immediate action can make the difference between a quick recovery and a serious complication.
What are the symptoms of a scorpion sting?
The first signs are usually intense pain in the affected area, redness, and tingling. In more severe cases, it is best to see a doctor immediately. The venom can cause the following symptoms:
Excessive salivation
Sweating
Nausea and vomiting
Difficulty breathing
Tachycardia
Tremors or muscle spasms
Anxiety or agitation
Specialists warn against applying home remedies, such as sucking out the venom, applying tourniquets, or rubbing the area with alcohol or herbs. The most important thing is to go to a health center immediately, where anti-scorpion serum can be administered.
What to do if you are stung by a scorpion and how to prevent stings?
In an interview, the Director of Public Health in the state of Nayarit, Dr. Federico Cortés, explained that health centers currently have sufficient anti-scorpion serum, which is administered free of charge and is highly effective if administered within the first two hours after the sting.
“The most common problem is that people wait or try to treat themselves with home remedies, which delays care and puts their lives at risk,” the official said.
Stay calm. Avoid moving the affected area.
Do not apply any substances or home remedies.
Go to the nearest health center as soon as possible.
If possible, take the scorpion for identification, but be careful not to put yourself at risk.
To prevent these animals from attacking someone, authorities recommend several preventative measures that can be implemented in seconds:
Shake blankets, clothing, and shoes before using them.
Do not walk barefoot, especially at night.
Seal cracks and crevices in walls and floors.
Install screens on doors and windows.
Keep your home clean and free of debris.
The Public Health System maintains a network of serum distribution in first-level centers, mainly in high-incidence areas. Despite this, many serious cases are due to people not seeking immediate medical help.
Prevention and information are key to avoiding complications. If you are stung, don’t take any risks: see a doctor immediately.
