Profeco Cracks Down on Gas Stations in Campeche for Price Gouging

The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO) has launched a crackdown on gas stations in the state of Campeche for allegedly raising prices without justification. The agency carried out simultaneous inspections at six gas stations across the state, including four in the municipality of Campeche and one each in Calkiní and Champotón.

The inspections were prompted by citizen complaints about unjustified fuel price increases in recent days, which have sparked discontent among motorists and sectors such as public transportation and agriculture. The main focus of the inspection was to ensure that the official gasoline prices are being respected, specifically that the price per liter of Magna gasoline remains below 24 pesos.

According to officials, the inspected stations were visited to review various aspects, including the exact liters dispensed at the pumps and the correct display of prices. While no sanctions or anomalies have been reported so far, the operations are ongoing and will continue at different points in the state.

Profeco has asked consumers to report any irregularities through official channels, and with the support of the National Guard, the agency is maintaining a security cordon at each surveillance point. The crackdown is part of an effort to ensure that gas stations comply with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s mandate to keep prices below 24 pesos per liter.

The inspections are a response to the recent international conflict between Iran and Israel, which has led to concerns about potential price hikes. However, Profeco has emphasized that any price increases must be justified and that consumers have the right to demand transparency and fairness in the fuel market.
