Yucatan businessmen want to match the schedule with that of Q. Roo

The Yucatán business sector will present a joint document to the state government requesting the harmonization of the state’s time zone with that of the neighboring state of Quintana Roo, as a measure to boost the economy.

This document, to permanently advance the current time by one hour, is being promoted by the Yucatán Hotel and Motel Association; the Mérida National Chamber of Commerce, Services, and Tourism (Canaco); and the Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex).

The president of the Mexican Hotel Association in Yucatán, Juan José Martín Pacheco, stated that the project is being promoted at the proposal of the president of Canaco Mérida, José Enrique Molina Casares. Regarding this, Martín Pacheco said it is positive to present a joint request to Governor Joaquín Díaz to harmonize the local time zone with that of Quintana Roo.

“It’s positive to create a document together and be able to sign it, so it has greater force. This is a process; it’s not just a matter of presenting the document and having it approved. It has greater force if we show unity. This means greater energy savings; in the case of Canaco, all businesses have more time to stay open, and Coparmex can achieve greater synergy and teamwork,” he explained.

It should be noted that since 2015, the neighboring state of Quintana Roo has permanently changed its time to that of the southeast and center of the country, one hour ahead.

On this topic, Juan Martín Pacheco stated that “for the hotel industry and for all tourism activity it is beneficial because we will have greater efficiency in time, we will have more light, normally the tourist activity starts at 8:00 a.m., and at 6:00 p.m. the sun sets and the night tours begin, but specifically for greater visits to the beaches, archaeological sites and cenotes the schedule is beneficial, this allows us to have an extra hour so that people can enjoy various places such as archaeological sites, adventure sites, magical towns, they can have a very pleasant sunset.”
