Who is the little-known son of “El Chapo” Guzmán who has distanced himself from drug trafficking?

269

Joaquín Guzmán Loera, known internationally as El Chapo, established himself as one of the most powerful men within the Sinaloa Cartel for at least two decades. After his latest capture and extradition to the United States, the reins fell into the hands of several of his sons, who forged their criminal careers under the name Los Chapitos.

Iván Archivaldo and Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar are currently on the US government’s list of priority targets. Ovidio and Joaquín Guzmán López—their half-brothers—are already under protection in that country, on the verge of an apparent negotiation with the authorities.

However, one of El Chapo’s sons stands out among his followers; unlike the other men, he apparently stayed away from drug trafficking activities. Who is this man? We’ll tell you at MILENIO.

From the Culiacanazo to the dismissal of drug trafficking charges against him in the US: a timeline of the case of Ovidio Guzmán, the youngest of Los Chapitos

El Chapo’s son who has remained in the shadows

In August 1977, El Chapo Guzmán married Alejandrina María Salazar Hernández, also from Sinaloa. He was 20 years old at the time and she was 19, according to information provided by the US Treasury Department. From that marriage were born three sons and a daughter: Iván Archivaldo, Jesús Alfredo, César, and Alejandrina Giselle Guzmán Salazar.

Much has been said about Iván Archivaldo and Jesús Alfredo. There are narcocorridos that recount their activities as criminal leaders, and various US agencies have identified them as part of the mechanism that led the Sinaloa Cartel to expand its operations internationally. In exchange for information leading to their capture, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is offering a reward of up to $10 million.

In contrast, César Guzmán Salazar has maintained such a low-profile that even his date of birth and appearance remain a mystery. In his book El Chapo: The Untold Story of the World’s Most Infamous Drug Trafficker, journalist Noah Hurowitz reiterates that he is the brother of Jesús Alfredo and Iván Archivaldo, but does not specify when he came into the world.

One of the few pieces of information known about this descendant of El Chapo was revealed in an investigation by journalist Susana Zavala, who confirmed César Guzmán’s involvement as a businessman in Jalisco.

According to documents from the Jalisco General Secretariat of Government, revealed by Zavala in 2019, César Guzmán participated as a majority shareholder in Jdoblecg Constructores S.A. de C.V., a real estate company registered in Guadalajara, of which there is no longer any trace.

It was also revealed that in 2000, César and his sister Alejandrina assumed equal ownership of Gisell Artículos Escolares y de Oficina S.A. de C.V., a company linked to the sale of stationery supplies that has also ceased to operate.

And what about Alejandrina Giselle?

Like her brother César, Alejandrina Giselle Guzmán has tried to stay out of the media spotlight. In December 2012, CNN confirmed that El Chapo’s daughter had reached a plea agreement with US judicial authorities.

At that time, she was allowed to leave prison after pleading guilty to possessing a visa with false information. She was in custody for just over two months and, according to information provided by her local team to the aforementioned outlet, she was pregnant at the time of her incarceration. Presumably, she traveled to the neighboring country with the intention of having her baby there.

In addition to the above, it is known that in January 2020 she married Édgar Cázares, nephew of Blanca Margarita Cázares Salazar, alias “La Emperatriz,” whom the United States identified as part of the financial network serving Ismael El Mayo Zambada.
