The municipality of Monterrey was recognized with the international “Tree Cities of the World 2024” award, granted by the organization Reforestamos México, in collaboration with the Arbor Day Foundation and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Representing the city, the Chief of Staff, Fernando Margáin Sada, received the recognition during the Urban Forests and Trees Forum, held in the capital of San Luis Potosí, where Monterrey’s commitment to the environment and urban sustainability was highlighted.

“The award places Monterrey among the global group of communities that understand that a city with urban trees is a better city to live in. Our goal of planting 85,000 trees is a public policy that represents a transformation in how we should conceive of urban development from a humanistic perspective,” said Margáin Sada.

What is Tree Cities of the World?

The Tree Cities of the World initiative, created in 2018 by the Arbor Day Foundation and the FAO, seeks to connect cities around the world in a network dedicated to sharing successful practices in the management and protection of community forests and urban trees.

Monterrey earned the recognition by meeting established criteria, including having a dedicated budget for tree planting, tree management, and sustainable environmental policies.

“The tree is a symbol of hope, of growth, of roots. May this recognition inspire us to continue planting not only trees, but also a new urban culture, in which development and nature go hand in hand,” the official concluded.
