U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will impose 30 percent tariffs on imports from Mexico and the European Union starting August 1, arguing that the measure is a response to the fentanyl crisis and the lack of results in combating cartels.
In a letter circulated on social media, Trump acknowledged progress in border security but accused Mexico of not yet stopping drug trafficking organizations.
He also warned of retaliation if the Mexican government responds with similar measures and encouraged U.S. companies to move their production to the United States.
