One stage of the manufacturing process for NFL championship rings, as well as the rings awarded to graduates of prestigious universities such as Harvard and Oxford, is carried out in Yucatán, according to Ángel López Rodríguez, state president of the Index Export Maquiladora Association.
Although the state’s export sector is mostly made up of textile maquiladoras, the business leader emphasized that the jewelry industry is the most valuable due to the value of the pieces it handles, as it regularly works with precious stones, diamonds, pearls, rubies, emeralds, as well as gold and silver.
“Many maquiladoras only assemble the pieces in Yucatán, while others cast the rings and earrings. And all these manufacturing processes are what enhance the final value of the product,” said the interviewee, who added that of the 33 maquiladoras in the state, six are jewelry factories.
