First case of measles detected, and whooping cough infections increase in Nuevo León

The Nuevo León Health Secretariat reported that the first case of measles in an adult was detected a few days ago. The case concerns a 21-year-old man from Chihuahua who arrived in the city of Monterrey on June 17 and presented symptoms on July 2. A PCR test confirmed that he was a carrier of the virus.

The agency subsequently deployed measures to identify his contacts and initiated a health cordon to prevent contagion. “A vaccination cordon was initiated, 33 blocks were covered, and 1,020 homes in the area were visited (…) We are talking about an imported case; there is no outbreak in the state,” stated Alma Rosa Marroquín, state Health Secretary.

However, whooping cough, a highly contagious respiratory infection, has recorded 113 cumulative cases so far in 2025 through week 27, compared to four cases in the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Health’s epidemiological bulletin for the week of June 29 to July 5. Nationally, there have been 1,100 cumulative cases so far this year.

The outbreak occurs as Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who believes the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines are linked to autism, was confirmed as U.S. Secretary of Health, the agency responsible for immunization policies.

Based on the distribution of confirmed measles cases by state and municipality, the Ministry of Health detailed that measles cases have been confirmed in 17 states and 55 municipalities across the country.

What is attributed to the increase in these diseases?

“The resurgence of diseases such as measles and whooping cough is due to several factors. One of the main ones is the decline in vaccination coverage, whether due to misinformation, access difficulties, or simply a lower perception of risk. Similarly, the mobility of people between regions or countries can facilitate the reintroduction of diseases that were already under control,” the PR department of Doctors Hospital Auna responded in writing.

The department explained that this hospital, located in Monterrey, participates in the Hospital Epidemiological Surveillance Network, which allows for constant surveillance. When a probable case is identified, the corresponding notification is made, and samples are sent to the Ministry of Health in accordance with the current NOM (National Health Regulations).

Covid-19 cases are on the rise in the State

Meanwhile, Nuevo León has led the state with the highest number of Covid-19 cases for several weeks, with 427 positive cases detected so far in the state and 5,320 nationwide.

“This could be related to the circulation of new variants; however, the current cases are less pathogenic (less capable of causing disease than others), and are part of seasonal illnesses,” indicated the PR department at Doctors Hospital Auna.

Therefore, Doctors Hospital Auna recommended that it is vital to keep vaccinations up to date, both for children and adults, especially against preventable respiratory diseases.

They warned that herd immunity is only achieved when a significant portion of the population is protected, which reduces the risk of transmission. In addition, simple measures such as frequent handwashing, ventilating closed spaces, and prompt attention to respiratory symptoms are important to prevent infections.
