In an operation led by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), U.S. federal authorities announced the seizure of $10 million in cryptocurrency directly related to the Sinaloa Cartel. This action represents a blow to the Mexican criminal group’s financial structure, officials reported during a press conference held on July 15 in Miami.

The announcement was made by Robert Murphy, acting administrator of the DEA, who was accompanied by Attorney General Pamela Bondi. During his remarks, Murphy emphasized that this seizure is a sign of the effort to weaken the logistical and financial mechanisms of transnational criminal organizations.

“Recently, in Miami, DEA agents seized approximately $10 million in cryptocurrency directly related to the Sinaloa Cartel,” Murphy said.

The Sinaloa Cartel’s use of cryptocurrency is not new. In several previous investigations, authorities have singled out members of this group for using digital currencies as a method to hide the illicit origin of their profits. This technological tool allows them to move large amounts of money with less traceability than the traditional financial system.

In this regard, Murphy warned about the growing sophistication of drug trafficking and its adaptation to the digital environment to remain active and competitive.

During the same briefing, Murphy reported that firearms were seized in Omaha and 40,000 fentanyl pills were confiscated. These findings are believed to be related to a drug trafficking cell operating within the country and maintaining ties to Mexican organizations, although the group responsible was not identified on this occasion.
